It means the High pressure pump is now kaput. shaving in the fuel lines will also mean the injectors are no kaput. The 1.6 only has a 5 speed gearbox, which is fine around town but at 80mph the engine is spinning at about 2500rpm hence the mpg. The 2.0TDI has the 6 speed box which has higher top gear, and ends up doing similar mpg because the gearing is well suited to that engine. It’s a common fault on some vw engines. Used to drive a 1.6 CAYC myself, they are notorious for injector failure. It is usually the solenoid on top of the injector that fails. However as far as I can remember when it happened (several times, to me ) it used to throw a flashing glow plug light. Se conduce chiar foare usor.
